Do you know about our 10 Healthy Habits for Your Brain? Positive, everyday actions can make a difference in brain health, even lowering the risk of cognitive decline and possibly Alzheimer's or another dementia. In 2025, challenge yourself to incorporate some or all of these habits into your life — it's never too early or too late to start. The generosity of NARFE and its members helps make awareness efforts like these possible — and all of our efforts to end this disease. We are so grateful for your support.

Delayed dream sleep linked to Alzheimer's disease risk
People who take significantly longer to enter the rapid eye movement (REM) phase of sleep may be experiencing an early symptom of Alzheimer's, according to a study published in Alzheimer's & Dementia®: The Journal of the Alzheimer's Association. Researchers said a delay in REM sleep disrupts the brain's ability to consolidate memories and may impair the hippocampus, a critical brain structure for memory. Previous studies have shown that the quality and amount of sleep people get can influence the risk of developing Alzheimer's. Learn more.

Independence in the early stage of Alzheimer's is possible
Some people living with Alzheimer's may continue to live successfully on their own during the early stage of the disease. Making simple adjustments, taking safety precautions and having the support of others can make things easier. Learn more.

An early Alzheimer's diagnosis is important
If you notice any of the warning signs of Alzheimer's or another dementia in yourself or someone you know, schedule an appointment with your doctor. An early diagnosis provides a range of benefits, including access to care and support, the ability to explore treatments that may provide some relief of symptoms, and the chance to enroll in clinical trials. Help family and friends adjust to Alzheimer's
Part of living with Alzheimer's or another dementia is adjusting to the experience and helping family and friends do the same. Knowing what to expect and what resources are available can make the process easier for you and those close to you. Learn more.
